Innovative Pathways to Public Service (IPPS) hosts “Careers in Government Day” annually to increase the awareness about public sector career opportunities to the workforce of tomorrow. During the month of April, educators and employers are partnering on a series of events across the greater Sacramento region offering 500 students virtual activities to increase their awareness of diverse careers in the public sector, including healthcare, environmental, digital media and security and more. Employer partners include city, county, state and public healthcare institutions. Educators include high schools and community college partners. Youth-serving organizations are supporting and coordinating the event as well.
2021: CIGD Goes Virtual
More than a dozen virtual events are planned for #CIGD2021. Employers, educators and partners are highlighting careers, career pathways, resumes, networking and fundamentals of job searching through panels, day-in-the-life discussions, virtual tours, games and interactive discussions. During the live events, students, teachers, and public sector industry professionals will discuss jobs, career paths that led to a professional’s current position, resumes, how to use LinkedIn and network, and current events that are impacting the future of public sector jobs, including COVID-19 and social justice movements.
As the return-to-classroom situation evolves, the team of IPPS coordinators, educators and employers will ensure that students on campus or digital classrooms have the opportunity to participate in this virtual experience.
By moving to a virtual #CIGD2021 experience, IPPS aspires to reach more youth as costs for field trips are reduced. Post-experience surveys of youth and adults will be conducted to help IPPS plan for future virtual or in-person programs.
This year’s #CIGD2021 events are sponsored signature partner, the City of Rancho Cordova.

IPPS is a cross-sector collaborative of organizations focused on youth and workforce development. IPPS members include leaders from education (K-12, community college and universities), workforce development, municipal and state government agencies, and regional community and business partners that want to align efforts for more intentional, effective pathways into public service.
IPPS is building a new paradigm of effective, data-driven strategies for attracting, developing and retaining talent. The Public Sector Workforce report published through the efforts of the collaborative, determined that 24% of all the jobs in the region are public sector jobs and that many public sector employers face challenges to develop a pipeline of workers ready to enter and advance through the ranks. Report details are available here.
